Thank you for your thoughtful response, Kerri. I am so thankful that you are doing well. I'm just not comfortable with medical people anymore, but I have had mammograms and all yearly checks for years. I did skip a year on the mammogram, but all was well the next year. Thanks so much for reading and responding.

I'm about a week into the world of blogging so this is all very new to me. But I came upon your blog and a couple things struck me- the last couple posts on anger and forgiveness in marriage and this post about mammograms. I am a 36-year old breast cancer surviving Christian woman and both my husband and I have a huge heart for building up healthy, lifelong marriages. We also have a huge heart for breast cancer awareness. I was diagnosed with stage 3 (nearly stage 4) breast cancer at the end of '07. I have since had a double mastectomy and just finished my reconstruction within the past six months and am now cancer-free! Praise God! Like your sister, mine was not considered hereditary (we chose to have genetic testing for my daughter's sake). Being adopted, I don't have any health history so I really felt the need to be sure.

I know this is long, but I wanted to encourage you in your battle with whether or not to have yearly mammograms. I would definitely encourage it. I had just celebrated my 33rd birthday a week and a half prior to my diagnosis. I have three young children, and at the time, my oldest was 4 and my youngest was 11 months. The medical choices I made from there on were based on survival for them and my husband (I have a Caringbridge site that journals my breast cancer journey: caringbridge.org/visit/kerridortch). I obviously wasn't having mammograms at the time (and what a fight that was with our health insurance), but I certainly wish it was available to younger women. Anyway, please do not be worried about the radiation exposure. I do have to say that I would have much rather found out sooner than later. And you're right, being here for your family, provided that that's what God's plan is, is definitely something worth fighting for by going in one time a year for that icky mammogram. :)

God bless and thank you for sharing! I think I'm going to like these parts of the blogging world!
